When I use a handheld light meter I would say my poor exposures fall to 5%. When I use the in-camera Autometer I would say 20% are poor.

What have you found?

  1. I have found that they would be ruined if I wasn't paying attention to what was going on.  I usually use the spot meter on my camera.  I also know that if I am metering on a highlight, I need to add another stop of light or so and if I am metering on a dark shadow, I need to drop a stop of light or so.  Usually I try to meter on a midtone and the exposure comes out good.

I would say I maybe have less than 5% of ruined photographs.  90% of those are ruined do to focus and 10% the exposure is off.  So only about .5% of my shots are ruined by auto exposure being bad.  (It would be higher if I didn't correct before taking the photo.)
