How much real gold, or what amount goes into the making of the medal?

  1. You have got  your answers, I am only posting to say that the silver medal cyclist got about $100.000 in cash, so with that he could buy a huge gold medal if he wanted.

    Not sure what the 1st price got in money but it must be well more than 2nd place got.


  2. It's all real gold, but for China, they don't just add pure gold, but add Jade, the chinese "gold". The metals are 50% pure gold and 50% pure jade.

  3. Lots of misinformation flying around on this issue.  The bronze, silver, and gold metals are all made of silver and jade.  The gold has no less than 6 grams of gold plating over the silver.  The bronze has bronze layered over the silver.

    I was disappointed to learn this myself.  Although I will never win an Olympic medal, I always assumed they were made of solid gold.

    A medal weighs about 5 ounces.  If it was made from solid gold, it would cost them about $4500 a medal to make them.
