I have a Rhododendron and Jacob's Ladder, but I just found out they're ideal for shade. Should I move them to the north side?

  1. If the plants are doing well in their current location, why move them?

As to what plants work best, this would depend upon your growing zone and as previously mentioned the amount of shade on that side of your home. Certain trees may also effect how plants grow.

I suggest contacting your County Master Gardener website to see if they have some guidelines for your area. They should also have a contact number to answer your questions.

  2. It really depends on the shading at your house. Yes, the south side does get the most sun, however, if you have trees or something else that shades them for 1/2 the day, leave them.

Ideally, any sun perennials would go on the south side (with the exception of a shaded area).

My personal favorites are perennial wildflower mixes.  Lilies, phlox, certain daisies, and ornamental grasses all make for a lovely combination in a sunny spot.

There's always roses, as well.  And hostas grow great anywhere except 100% full sun.....
