I'm looking to get a pet snake, but Im a bit turned off by the idea of sending little furry mice to their dooms.

Is there a small snake I can easily get that will not need mice or similar larger preys? I wouldn't mind crickets or other small things.

This'll be my first pet snake, so easy care would also be appreciated. I dont want anything too large.

  1. Well there are a few. Have you considered feeding frozen/thawed? That's what all my snakes are on. The mouse is already frozen so there is nothing I/you can do about it. I refuse to feed my snakes live because I will always have this feeling that I can save it and it makes me feel horrible! =[

So I have never and will never feed them live...also because live mouse can carry dieases and it could give it to my snakes too...which isn't good.

Well if this is your first snake then I would recommend a ball python but they eat mice. You can try them on frozen/thawed. You just have to warm up the water and let the mouse thaw out for a bit then feed it to them. Ball pythons are really cool too. Here is a website on them if you want anymore info about them.

Or you could try owning a garter snake. They can eat many things. Fish, worms, or frozen/thawed pinkies. Below is a care sheet on the garter snake. My cousin use to own one and he likes it alot. Plus they don't get to big...18-51 in.

  2. garter snakes!! They dont need to eat rodents. They can eat feeder fish, crickets, insects, roaches, and other bugs.
