  1. I have to agree with a combination of the other posts.  The most important thing to doing this, is understanding the technique on how to do it, which has been accurately described as creating two copies of the image, one which will be in B/W, and one in color.  Then it is a matter of selecting the portion of the image you want different from the color copy, using whatever selection tools you prefer to use, to select the part of the image you want to be different, and cut it out.  Then take that part and paste it over the other image in B/W, and put it in the correct spot.

As for programs, all of the programs already posted will work - it's just a matter of what programs you may already have or are willing to spend money for.  Photoshop would be the best program, but also the most expensive and advanced.  Photoshop Elements is a good alternative for a only around $50.  Or if you want free, GIMP is probably your best bet, although it is not as easy to use as Photoshop Elements.

  2. Photoshop ($$$)

    GIMP(0.0) : http://www.gimp.org/windows/

  3. Hi,

The technique (well, the way I'd do it!) involves two copies of the same original colour photo, some monochrome conversion and layering, and you can achieve these things reasonably well with the very much cheaper Photoshop Elements and some ingenuity.   That's not to say that you don't have more flexibility with Photoshop CS, which is why it exists.  A product like Jasc's Paint Shop Pro is a good price/features compromise if you eventually become a power user!

There are layering tutorials on the web, such as:

  4. What you have to do is select the area you want to be black and white with the lasso tool, leaving out the areas you want to be colored. Then go into Image and change it to grayscale. It can take some time, but there's not an easy way to do it.
