I am really working on my poetry over the summer. I have a decent descriptive vocabulary, but It seems like every time I write I'm using the same words and phrases and it's really getting dull. for a while I was just skimming through dictionaries and stuff, but I thought of this. Definitions would be nice, but it doesn't matter to me, I could just look it up, just looking for something really deep.

Thank you.

  1. You are the only person qualified to answer this. The words have to resonate within YOU. As for me:

    Emotional; contumely.

    Beautiful; Pastrami.

    Bloody; Exsanguination.

    Dark; Crepuscular...or maybe Pumpernickel.

    De gustibus etc.

  2. a singular word should not define a piece in itself.

rather, a poem beautifully constructed is rendered through every word's overall cohesiveness

  3. analsex

  4. Well... thesauruses are great if you run out of words... I love them and use them regularly- it's not cheating if you use them correctly. .

On the other hand, some linguists got together and decided that "cellar door" was the most linguistically beautiful phrase in the English language, so you could always use that.

  5. You need to take a word and write every word that can rhyme with it. We all know the easy ones, but rhyming 'me' and 'soliloquy' makes you come off 'Dylanesque'! The creative writing process is tough. You have to search your mind for the metre and timing, the story lines origin and the comparisons between fantasy and reality. And pass through the hoop of understanding why your audience thinks your deep and repetitive at the same time. We all can't taste the wine the same way and in this process you find yourself and your given ability to prose. Don't let a dictionary define your thoughts, let your imagination redefine the meanings inside the dictionary! Listen to folk songs from the 60's, read lots of haiku's, limericks, lyrics and odes. Be informed that what you do is not simple and that your greatest reward is the words from your very soul!
