What search phrase would you use to search Google, Yahoo, Msn, or any other search engine if you wanted to purchase the following items: Dragon art prints and posters, coffee mugs with dragons and or fairie images on them, and lastly, how do you avoid getting taken to irrelevant web pages instead of pages that specifically sell these kind of items?

Thanks for your help

  1. Try these:

    "dragon art" prints posters

    "dragon art" mugs

    "dragon art" gifts

    "faerie art" prints posters

(Since faerie is the less common spelling, you'll probably get better results using fairy.)

    "fairy art" prints posters

    "fairy art" mugs

    "fairy art" gifts

If you still find you're getting too many false hits, try adding 'cart' or 'buy' to the search terms. Nearly all retail sites will have at least one of these words on it's pages.

Also, most search engines will suggest similar searches that you can try. Yahoo puts these at the top and bottom of the page; Google at the bottom.

Finally, if you're getting a lot of false hits of a certain type try to find a keyword that you can EXCLUDE from a search. For example, if you were to search for 'dragon art' and saw a lot of results for tattooing or tattoo parlors, you can exclude them from the results by adding -tattoo to the search terms. You can even exclude phrases: -"tattoo parlor".

Evaluating search engine results can sometimes be difficult, but the better able to refine your search terms the better your results will be (but be careful not to make your search so specific that you end up missing good results!) And then the excerpt shown with the result really helps narrow down the most likely sites. It's more of an art than science. I've been doing this for 12 years and I still get led wildly astray sometimes.
