I am going on vacation to France and will be spending part of my visit with a host family. I am making a photo album of my town, etc... and am going to include some vacation pictures I have from the US. What landmarks or buildings etc... do the French know a lot about in NYC, Hawaii, Chicago etc...? I'm sure they know a lot about everything, but I'm just wondering what they would enjoy seeing. Thanks!

  1. Hiya,

I'm sure they will like everything.

If you will stay with them for a while, you should bring photos of your family and the place where you stay.

It will help the friendship if you share with them something personal because they will (I am sure because I am French) show you the family photo album as well.

If you like to know more about the difference between the French and the Americans, I think you should read the book called "Sixty Million Frenchmen can't be wrong".

It will help you to avoid little mistakes and understand some practices and life attitudes that you've probably never seen before. You will be face to funny things.

I hope it help and that you will have very nice vacation in France.

To Mnémosyne, I don't know if you went to the US before but Americans have a totaly different way of life. Things which are important for French are less inportant for Americans.

When I mean "funny things" it's that he could find funny that we take something (than Americans do not really take care of) very seriously.

Is it more understandable for you now ???

  2. French people place a great importance on family.  So, they may wish to see pictures of your family, friends.  They are also more private the americans so they may not be as interested as americans might be.  Of course, pictures of cities, buildings, parks, places, houses, etc... are always fun to see...

  3. most known places. your family. friends. things u like to do. places you love to go to. the family will be more interated in you

  4. Anything purely American. If you ever went to a rodeo for example, a parade, a house being moved, baseball... Pictures of your town will probably interest them, you will see for yourself the difference in how cities are built. Some of your family and your house.

We have so many US made series on TV we are quite familiar with all those NYC landmarks, much less from Hawai and Chicago.

  5. i went on a trip like that and stayed with a family. my family loved pictures of beaches in florida and any of the big cities (ny, chicago, LA, etc.). They really wanted to see pictures of my family, but unfortunatly i left those at home. pretty much any picture that portrays typical "American things". oh and stuff about Washington D.C. is good too. but they really enjoyed seeing pictures of the town I lived in. i hope that helps! :)

  6. I totally agree with Cabal, show them american things, like base ball, rodeo, etc...

But I wonder what does Blandichette mean when she speaks of "funny things you have never seen" about french people and behaviour...???

I'm french (that's why my english is so bad!) and I really wonder! You can send me an e-mail...

  7. I'm sure they'll like anything that you show them.  And of course they know many US landmarks, so it would be lovely if you could show them your pictures. :-)

  8. Take pictures of schools, and the "yellow" buses, which is stuff that has been seen in movies but never in real life for French people, take pictures of limos, big buildings and things like that. That is what I dream of when I was in France but now that I have seen them on my own I know... (I have been in the us for 6 years). Honestly anything, they will apreciate :) but really big buildings and schools, are important to us!
