I'm headed to Germany for several months this summer, and will be all over the country visiting relatives and friends. Any reccomendations on activities or awesome places to visit?

I will be spending the most time in Oberstaufen, Dresden, Munich, and Hamburg, as well as Berlin. Thanks!

  1. The new rail road station in Berlin, Castle Neuschwanstein and Garmisch Parten Kirchen.

  2. Look for www.Fulda.de

  3. Make sure you go along the Rhine between Koblenz and Mainz. Beautiful area. When in oberstaufen, try to spend a couple of days at lake Konstanz and take the Boat across to Swiss.

  4. Whatever you do, don't miss the boat-trip from Bingen to Koblenz (or the other way round) on the Rhine! You can take the boat both ways or go back by train, and visit one of the castles.

Bamberg in Franconia (part of Bavaria today) is a lovely city, with the most varied and best beers in the world. It has one brewery for every thousand inhabitants! The wine is pretty good as well, and the food is phantastic. See the cathedral and have a walk along the river.

If you are in or near Munich you should visit the "Deutsches Museum", even absolute technophobes like myself enjoy that.

And don't forget to go to at least one of mad Ludwig II's palaces, my own favourite is Herrenchiemsee.

If your stay extends to autumn, from September onwards there are hundreds of little places near lake Constance where you can see from a bunch of twigs over the door of an ordinary house that they have new wine to try, and there is one romantic village/town after the next, the same in the Black Forest. From the Black Forest it is not far to Strasbourg with its cathedral that is the least modified from its medieval self of all the gothic cathedrals in Germany and France.

From Oberstaufen it is not too far to Wuerzburg and the Archbishop Elector's Palace, or one of the medieval towns like Rotenburg, Noerdlingen or Tuebingen.

Whatever you decide to do, have a lovely time.

  5. Hamburg
