What places in the U.S. are a 'must see'?

Question

A friend is moving from San Diego, CA to Raleigh, NC. They're going to take their time driving, since it may be the only time they get to make the trek. They are looking for any suggestions for places they should visit or see along the way. I'm not sure of the route they're going to take (it is flexible, depending on what they plan on visiting). Any suggestions? Looking for both infamous and relatively unknown treasures. Thanks!

A detour to Lake Tahoe, one of our National treasures.  Las Vegas, a town that is 24/7,  Get a shot of booze and lobster at 7 in the morning.

Well, obviously the usual yellowstone, grand tetons etc... jackson, wyoming is really cool. it has a million dollar saloon with silver dollars embedded in the bar under a piece of glass as the top of the bar. there's also jamestown, virginia which is the first colonial settlement.

I highly suggest getting a new Rand McNally Road Atlas.  This will show you the sites along the way.  Also do a web search of each state, and go over the activities they have posted.  

Without knowing what the likes and dislikes are, it would be difficult to say.

I have traveled I-10 and I-40 several times, and the list is endless.  And tons of fun.

I'd run the 8 to the 10 to the 17 to the 40 to North Carolina, with maybe a detour west to catch the Grand Canyon. The whole d**n country is beautiful, but running the 40 this time of year is a dream.
