  1. With the unaided eye you can see Venus and sometimes Mercury around sunrise and sunset.  You can see Mars Jupiter and depending on the time of year, Saturn can all be seen at night towards the south from the northern hemisphere.

  2. There are only five that are visible with the NAKED EYE. They are Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus.  Of course you can see them all with the aide of a telescope. As far as when you can see them it varies, but usually the begining of fall is your best time when they are the brightest. Some are only visible from earth every few years, but I'm not sure.

  3. If you are only planning on looking with your eyes, in other words, you are NOT going to use binoculars or a telescope, then there are only five planets that you can see. These five planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. By the way, all five of these planets were known to ancient sky watchers.

Currently, Jupiter is well placed for observation. It appears as a very bright star and it is visible in the southeastern sky just after dark. You can also see Venus, Saturn, and Mars this week, however, you have to look for them just after sunset. They are located low in the western sky. As for Mercury, it is the most difficult of the five planets to spot in the sky because it is located close to the Sun and therefore it is almost always located in the glare of the Sun. Perhaps the best place to always find out which planets are visible is by checking the "This Week's Sky at a Glance" page at the Sky & Telescope website. (see link below)

  4. MARS ,MERCURY

  5. all ,, btu at different imes of year,, if they werent visibke,,, how would we label them as planets

  6. They can ALL be seen from earth.  But you may need a telescope.

You can call a local observatory (you have some really good ones in Mass.) to know exactly where and at what time to look.

If you don't know where an observatory is, try calling a local colleg and see if they have one.

  10. All the planets from Jupiter on in can be seen with the naked eye...as you where and when, you local paper has that info with the weather information, but since you may want instant info:

and if like me you enjoy seeing the bright International Space Station crossing the night sky, here is a link, just click on the closest town/city in Massachusetts to see your schedule:

  11. naked eye: mercury, venus, mars, jupiter, saturn (the classical planets, known to the ancients)

    with a telesscope: uranus, neptune

uranus is just barely visible to the naked eye, but the ancients appear not to have noticed it.

check the charts in sky and telescope to find out where to find them.
