The plant needs to be a potted plant on a balcony that faces east and gets a lot of sun. Optimally the plant would be 4-5 feet high when full grown. My thumb is totally black and I am not good with plants so something robust and low maintenance.

  1. Shade beat me to it, but my first suggestion was Snake Plant. Toughest thing out there. I have one now that is about 3.5' tall.have had it for close to twenty years. neglect it all the time.

  2. Go with cactus or succulents. You can ignore them and they don't mind.

A jade plant (crassula ovata) will get tall in a pot, as will Crassula tetragona.

  3. If you're in San Diego, you could try a dwarf citrus.  Orange would probably be the easiest to grow, but there's lemon, tangerine, lime, kumquat, etc.  They like lots of sun, and the climate in S.D. would be perfect.

  4. Get a Mother in Law Tongue...sometimes called a snake plant.  They will grow in shade or sun and the only thing you have to remember is not to water too much. They need to be watered  a couple of times per month in the summer and once per month in the winter. They are indoor plants so you would have to bring them indoors in the winter if you live in a cold climate. These are the toughest house plants around, next to impossible to kill and will reach maybe 4 feet high or a little more if your lucky. You don't even have to transplant them until they actually break the pot they are in or make the sides of the pot bulge. They can stay in the same pot for years.

They come in a varigated leaf form like the picture below or a solid green form.
