  1. I'm in zone 6 in a high-desert type climate and am an avid gardener with lots of experience.

I would recommend perennials.  There are some evergreen shrubs that would work too.  Ornamental grasses are great for your needs and they add a lot of interest to a garden.  When picking plants, be aware of the conditions underwhich the plants thrive (water, soil type, temps).  You should know your growing zone when picking plants.  If you are in zone 6 don't pick a plants that only grows in zone 8 because the winter will likely kill them.  Find your zone here:  http://www.garden.org/zipzone/

I have purchased nearly all my perennials that are both frost/freeze tolerant and xeric (drought tolerant) from High Country Gardens.  I highly recommend them.  They sell perennials, bulbs, shrubs and ornamental grasses.    Here is their website.

I recommend that you browse their website because everyone has unique plant needs.  You might like perennials such as lavenders or Russian Sage and others might like  Hummingbird mints or ornamental grasses.  They have such variety.  Order their catalog, at least.  You won't be disappointed.

  2. Black eyed susan, cone flower, many perennials will fit your category.
