  1. Hawaii isn't on a plate boundary, but near the middle of the Pacific Plate.  For that reason, the volcanoes of Hawaii are a bit of an anamoly.  They were formed by the Pacific Plate moving over a hotspot in the Earth's mantle, rather than by tectonic activity at a plate boundary.

  2. Hawaii lies in the middle of the Pacific plate, but it might seem like it's on the edge of a continental plate due to the high level of volcanic activity.  However, the volcanic activity is due to the fact that the islands themselves are formed from active volcanoes.  When the volcanoes erupt, they pour out molten hot lava, which cools when it hits the sea and forms new land.  Over time, this land builds up and builds up and *poof* you have an island.  Hope that helps!
