Barn raisings where the whole community gathers to erect one of these things in minimal time for someone in need, often a newlywed couple.

Or the familiar hexagram emblem on the side of the barn.

We can learn a lot from the Amish.  Remember the tragedy of a couple of years ago when someone shot up an Amish school?  They recognized the family of the assailant as victims as well since they lost a family member as well.  They also forgave the gunman.  These seem to be the Christian ideals that I was taught as a young boy, but nobody ever lives up to.

I remember the barn on my grandparents' farm.  I was huge and cool inside, and dim.  There were "rooms" along one side where food and hay were stored, and equipment for taking care of the cattle.  Sometimes there were mice and rats, and once there were a family of skunks that made a nest in the hay bales.  The inside smelled like hay, dust, grain, cattle feed, mud and dung, but it still smelled fresh somehow.  My sister and I loved to play in the barn among the stacks of hay bales, and once we played with a little calf that wasn't doing too well.  It was a very nice and comfortable barn.  I miss those days!
