  1. If you are not afraid of manual focusing – and you shouldn't be – consider either the 50mm f/1.8 or (better) f/1.4.  When you can throw the background out of focus to shift the emphasis to the main subject, it makes for a nice portrait.  I hope Pooky posts an answer with links to some of his beautiful samples of large aperture portraits.
