What position should i play in college rugby?

im going to the university of south carolina to play rugby next semester... i played in high school and was the team captain as a scrumhalf. However... i want to get on A-team ASAP. im 5'10 and 155 lbs... but i plan on putting some weight on. im not a tremendous kicker. i have average speed, but good acceleration. im good at directing people as well, and i am a tremendous tackler...

  1. Basically at tryouts go to your coach and let him look at you and tell you were he wants you, at the start you will all train together so say that your versatile and that you could play any where. He will know where he wants you. Just make sure your fit and your passing and tackling is up to scratch and you should be fine. Of course kicking is a big bonus so just make sure you show you can play abit, you can run, pass, tackle, kick and you'll be in.

You might give hooker a try.  In the modern game, this skills you learned at scrumhalf will come in handy at hooker.  Know that you will most likely be the smallest forward, which means hitting guys who are quite a bit bigger than you.  That doesn't mean it can't be done.  I played hooker for U. of Michigan at 5'9" and 155lbs.  It will also mean that your team essentially has two scrumhalfs on the field, which can help speed up the open field play (especially in regards to getting the ball out of rucks and mauls).  You will also need to know what type of game the school plays.  Some schools play a very pack heavy game, while some try to get it to the backs as quickly as possible.  Bothe scrumhalf and hooker are technical positions that require specific positional skills, which means that you might have to fight to gain a spot.  The other side are positions like center and flanker that may not be as technical, but usually have many more players vying for the spots.

    Talk to the coach and the team captain, they'd be able to tell you what they need better than we could.

  3. Practice kicking, and you've got yourself a half position! (either scrum-half, or fly-half) While you are gaining weight, and improving your kicking, you can be a scrum half.

  4. Flanker would be the obvious choice. It would also increase your chances of getting a starting spot as there are two places on the team for you. If you bulk up you could also fill in as a smaller number 8. Its hard to develop serious bulk and keep your speed up ( i think) so you may find you become too slow for scrum half.

    The higher up you get you start to get some serious competion for key spots like number 9 and 10. and kicking would become a serious issue.

  5. Talk to your coach and volunteer! You'll likely have better luck getting in as a flanker. Being willing to play any position and having experience are big assets.

  7. You sound like you'd be a scrumhalf heh.  Have you thought about playing hooker? They often direct the defense and scrums, but they don't have to be as big.  Also as forwards they obviously tackle a lot, and good acceleration is important for running off unloads.  You're prob not big enough to play as any other forward position except maybe flanker, if you're good.  Maybe you could be a center, but you need to be able to kick for fullhalf and run fast as wing.

Stick to what u know best, you sound like a decent scrum half, just let your coach know that you also have a kicking game for touch kicks and shots at goal, when stuck in your 22 get someone to fill in the scrum half role and pass it to you for a clearance or even punt it from the scrum half position, if you want to make the A team then you need to focus on what you know and build from there, changing your position would only give you more work to get a feel for that position, at least at scrumhalf you already have expierence
