  1. Russia was allied with France and UK against Germany and Austria-Hungary (AU). The motivation to enter war on behalf of Serbia was motivated by several factors.  The Serbia was allying with Russia, because it was aware of AU pressure in the Balkans.  Austria disliked the independent Serbia, because it was in the way to get Balkans under its control.  Russia was fearful that AU control of the region would cut Russia access to the Mediterranean as AU got closer to the Black Sea (Romania was initially ally of AU). Russia felt the threat on its southwestern borders and started to wage a war against AU.  This brought the rest of the Europe to the world war.

Black Sea and Balkans was very extremely sensitive issue for Russia and its population.  They were humiliated there during Crimean war over half century earlier (1856) and were again humiliated by Japan in 1905. Russia, which had the largest army in the world at that time, did not want to idle, while AU +Germany and their allies (Bulgaria and Turkey, while unpredictable Romania was absent until 1916) would overrun the Serbia and left Russia empty handed.  The war between AU and Russia was one of the most brutal during WWI.  While Russia had planned for the war against AU, AU was unprepared to deal with two fronts at the same time. This brought Germany against Russia and France.  During WWI Russia attempted to keep northern Black Sea under its control well to the collapse of their monarchy where Germans briefly occupied Ukraine to the end of war.

  2. A bad one. Discontent at home. Defeat at the front. As Civil War broke out, the communists withdrew from the war, ceding land to Germany.

  3. Russia allied with France, Britain against Germany

Russia was the one that lost most people in the 1st world war(and the 2nd world war, too). The 2nd was France, 3rd the Germany. So it could be said that Russia also played a big role in the war, by stopping Germany to focus its main power on invading France.

Bur Russia did not do well as its allies hoped for.

Russia had serious domestic issues, so it made Russia hard to be

effecient during the war. Eventually, revolution happened and

    communists took over.

    --------------------------------------...

Lenin, leader of Russian revolution, thought that this war was

to satisfy greed of capitalists. So we got out of the war by treating

    with Germany.

After Russia gave up, Germany could focus its whole power on

France. France and Britain were in trouble until US replaced the

role of Russia, by sending 2 million soldiers
