Defensive back normally.   Could be a fullback, occasionally a running back, and possibly a linebacker.

Ronnie Lott made that number famous as a Safety (and cornerback) on defense, and many other defensive backs still wear it (probably more safeties than corners).  Numbers in the "40"s are for Fullbacks as well.

That number would probably be worn by a safety or corner back. I believe that's Troy Polamalu's number who plays safety for the Steelers.
