Question:

What position would give me a better chance at playing in college?

Right now I'm a sophomore outside hitter for my high school varsity team. Last year I played outside hitter and middle blocker but I think this year I'll only play outside. I'm too short for middle only 5'5". I was thinking about asking my coach if I could start playing DS because I really want to get recruited to play in college but I think I'll be too short to play at the net for most schools. What do you think?

  1. even though your too shot to play front row in college, still know all the positions just in case

i would suggest being a libero cause thats only backrow player

    good luck!

  2. depends

  3. You will probably not get many people at the top 25 NCAA D1 schools look at you for the front row.

If you are going to switch, go for the Libero.  They can serve in high school and college.  They can not serve for club.  (There is a rumor that the FIVB international rules may add a second Libero after the Olympics.  If they do, USAV will add one for the next season they can.  Colleges will add the second Libero before you are ready to play in college.)

One other factor is that there are over 300 D1 schools with volleyball.  There are many D2, D3, NJCAA and NAIA schools with volleyball teams.  You might have trouble convincing any of the top 25 teams in those categories to let you play middle.  I do know of a D2 school that won the national championship with an outside hitter at 5'4" (real height, not press guide height.)

One last factor.  Talk with your coach first before you decide.  Your coach may need you to play outside or middle.  You do not want to go to the coach and say I need this.  I do not care about the team.  I need this.  Remember the old saying that there is no "I" in TEAM.  See if the team could use you playing in the back row as well.  Maybe the team needs for you to play in the front row, but you can play in the back row as well to show the colleges how well rounded you are.  And how good you are in the back row as a DS or Libero if they want.

  4. um.. r u good at setting if you are 5'5 is a perfect height for setting. Yea. 5'5 is pretty short but if you can jump heigh enough and make up for that go for it. : D

  5. definatly aim for libero or ds because as a short player you will probably not get to play at the net, and you should start getting you skills down before you have to try out for college

***hope i helped and good luck!!!

  6. I'm 5'5" and in high school. My coach doesn't even let me play at the net.  lol So I play Libero. You will not have a good chance at all in college if you are at the net. But If you have a good vertical jump you are good though.

If your doing good at OH than stay there.

  7. There is no question that you will be considered too short to play the front row in college. I'm 5'5" and I'm a libero getting ready to play in college. I would start developing skills to become a DS, because you will probably have no other choice! Sorry, short people get the short end of the stick in volleyball, I'm afraid!
