MI4 is a special investigation branch and has powers above the police / CID.

MI6 is an organization that doesn't exist! it's members have no powers at all and only rely on not getting caught!

Much higher than a standard police officer. But only a rare few of them exist, as they have powers beyond the norm. They are like a ghost in daylight, or a shadow at midnight.

MI6 do not operate within the UK. MI5 work alongside the police in the UK. occasionally when dealing with certain individuals they have to "break the law" to get the required result,  but they have there contacts inside the police and the Home Office who will take care of any situation

MI6 or the Secret Intelligence Service serves Her Majesty's government in matters of foreign security matters, foreign intelligence, and foreign operations of special nature.

MI6 "Military Intelligence" Section 6, is similar to the CIA, but throw in the NSA. MI6 also conducts covert operations worldwide. Intelligence operations such as recruiting foreign operatives, surveillance, collection etc.

There is a special ops unit like in the CIA, not like in James Bond.

MI6 has no authority on the British mainland. MI6 must act in accordance with UK law, however under the Intelligence Services Act 1994, individual agents may be approved to carry out certain acts deemed illegal in the UK. The act allows for the State Secretary to grant immunity from prosecution to agents who have committed various acts either pre approved or post approved in the furtherance of national good. Each case is reviewed individually.

MI6 is much more secretive than the CIA and British law exempts intelligence services from public scrutiny. Almost nothing factual gets printed about MI6. MI6 works closely with the CIA. MI6 has extensive oversight.

MI5 is the Security Service, and serves Her Majesty's government in all matters that threaten the peace, safety and security of the realm.

MI5 is like the FBI, Secret Service and CIA rolled into one. MI5 is not confined to the homeland as is wrongly believed.

MI5 works closely with police and MI6.MI5 is less secretive than MI6 but much more secretive than the FBI.

MI5 is properly called an intelligence agency and not a law enforcement one. MI5 agents are civilians and not police. MI5 agents can not arrest or detain anyone.

MI5 collects evidence and builds cases to be presented to police authorities and other units of the National Intelligence Machinery, as it's called.

MI5 deals with organized crime, terrorism, sedition, treason, counter espionage and WMD counter proliferation.
