Way back when i could have been beheaded for less than being so informal with the monarch, they seemed to have a lot of power over the country, what powers if any do modern day monarchs of the UK have? Are they more jump for pomp and ceremony? Who was the last king or queen to hold real power? And what changed?

  1. She can order lamb chops for dinner.

  2. A lot more than the rest of us I think.

  3. Actually,Queen Elizabeth II is the only member of the royal family who has access to see any and all documents concerning secret and covert operations thru military or intelligence . She only has the ability to advise, but under the Constitution, she is forbidden from introducing any legislation to Parliament.

Many people write to the Queen every day and she has a staff who sorts her mail to see that the letters are sent to the proper organization. Not only does she meet regularly with the Prime Minister, but she also greets new ambassadors on behalf of the United Kingdom.

Also, the royals  often meet with heads of international companies in order to bring in jobs and income  to benefit the country.

  4. Leading the Church of England famous for their Crusades in other countries, slaughtering the masses that sort of thing, just like they did in medieval times.

  5. Technically she has lots.  In effect she can ask a minister to form a government if she has no outgoing prime minister (as in if the old one dies), if the old one refuses to advise, and there is not an obvious candidate.

That leaves some reserve powers which only she can use.   These include the right to make people Knights of the Garter, Knights of the Thistle, membership of the Order of Merit or of the Royal Victorian Order.   She has the absolute right to legislate the management of the royal house other than the sucession.   For example, she can change her name, give titles, grant arms etc.

The queen may also refuse to grant an early dissolution of Parliament to a Prime Minister who does not have the support of the majority in Parliament.

She may dismiss a government is she wishes.   This last happened in the first have of the 1800's.   She may veto or refuse to assent ot a bill.   Anne did this in 1708.

She may refuse to permit a bill to be brought to Parliament which aims to restrict the crown's right to inherit property from people who do not have blood relatives or a will.   She may also refuse to allow a bill to be brought in which seeks to limit her personal authorities (even those which she must exercises on the advice of ministers) or her right to receive treasure trove.   These rights and authorities are those of the crown rather than the queen - treasure trove goes to the Chancellor and the Treasury not to her personally.   She last used this right to prevent a MP from bring a bill to change from the Crown (i.e. the government) controlling the military in Iraq to having control vested in parliament.   This was following advice of the cabinet.

But her most active power is the right to offer advice, question her ministers, counsel them, caution them and sometimes even praise them.   It is her influence rather than her allowed powers which makes her a powerful person.

  6. As far as im concerned she has none.

  7. I think she still has Royal Assent. John Major lost a vote in the commons and went to the Queen and told her that if the legislation did not become law it would bring down the government. She duly signed and made it law even though it had failed to be passed by Parliament.

  8. Her Britannic Majesty by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, Head of State and Sovereign is Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen as Head of State can dismiss Parliament, call an election and invite the party with the biggest majority to form a Government. The Queen can declare War and authorise a State of Emergency. Only The Queen can grant a Royal Pardon : when hanging was still in force, The Queen could grant clemency for someone sentenced to death.

Not entirely the powerless puppet  as other commentators have said.

Charles I was probably the last despot : we now have a happy compromise. The Queen reigns but She does not rule.

  9. At night she fights evil with her superpowers (shh don't tell anyone it's a state secret)

  10. i think she has electricity and gas like most people , or do you mean what can the queen do , not a lot she and the royal family are just figure heads now

  11. She has the power to veto legislation by refusing to sign it. This hasn't been used since Queen Anne in 1707 though. I think she also has the power to block a parliamentary debate on abolishing the monarchy. Also, if no party gets an overall majority in the House of Commons, she gets to choose the Prime Minister. She also has the discretionary power to hand out certain honorific titles like being a member of the Order of the Garter etc. It should be remembered though that in what is arguably a test-case, when the late Belgian King Baudouin II refused to sign a law legalising abortion in 1989, the Belgian govt temporarily declared him unfit to rule and then signed the law themselves, before reinstating him!

  12. She can fly, and has x-ray vision, and talks to us at christmas after we have all had a fight and need something to do.

  13. The crowned sovriegn of Britain has the reserved right to close parliment. Also even if the people have elected a government, if she does not accept them then they cant rule ><

  16. She has no official powers.

The Prime Minister and Parliment make the laws.

  17. I believe that she has Freeze-o-vision!
