As I was cleaning my horses' stalls this afternoon, I noticed parts of a wild rabbit lying under the wheelbarrow. It certainly wasn't there in the morning when I put them in for the day, so it happened between 8 am - 5pm. There was an ear, half a face with the eye, and some fur. About 10 feet away, I saw what was left of the rabbit tucked in an opening between the wall and hay bales (it looked like it may have been placed there for a later meal). When I picked it up by its feet (wearing gloves), there was the 2 back legs, hind end, and the ribcage was exposed.
There were no pools of blood and it wasn't quite the mess you would expect, which made me think that perhaps it was killed, then dragged into the barn for consumption. Then again, that 1/2 a face, ear, and fur in one spot, then the 1/2 carcass in another really puzzles me.
We live in Ohio, so there are coyotes, and the typical predators (hawks, crows, opossum, etc.), but I can't figure out who would be the culprit. Can you??
