What present can I get for an engagement?

My friends daughter is getting engaged to her girlfriend and I'm wanting to get them something unusual.

I didn't realize that you're supposed to buy an engagement gift...oh well, I guess there's a gift for every occasion if one wants it that way.

Something unusual?  I don't know them, but you must if you feel close enough to buy a present.  

Do they already live together?

Don't get anything to do with a house such as a toaster or a lamp go for something that is active and that they will both enjoy.

For my engagement, my MOH bought us kind of a journal type book. It had pages to fill out with things such as when we met, first date, first kiss, etc. and it had pages for wedding details - party members and their relationship to us, when and where, menus, dress details, etc. It was a great way to put things down in writing for future reference and as a historical item for our family and future.

If it's that kind of relationship then some tennis coaching lessons would make a suitable gift.

Nothing for an engagement.  But when they get married, then you can give them a nice gift.  Or if you want to give them something, perhaps at their engagement party, perhaps a picture frame with their picture in it or a romantic dinner gift card.

Or you can shop around and find a wonderful wedding cake topper for when they have the wedding.  One that has two brides on top.  They're making them now.

Something that would be both practical and useful. Sometimes, there is a list of desired presents, like a wedding list, where people can name and tick off what they are buying to prevent duplication of gifts.

I would enquire if there was one before buying anything.
