i have a test tomorrow on Earth's Movements. On the review sheet it says "The inner core and the outer core are both very hot. The metals in the outer core are melted because of the heat. The metals in the inner core are solid because there is so much pressure." What is causing the pressure. My teacher related the earth to a snow ball and when you pack a snow ball the middle becomes hard, so she is saying this is why the core is solid. What is "packing" the earth to make it's core solid? Or what is the pressure that is making the earth's core solid?? i have a test on this tomorrow so please ANSWER ANSWER ANSWER!!

  1. Ground pressing down under the force of gravity.

The gravity acts like the squeezing hand in the snowball analogy.

Materials exist in three phases; solid liquid gas

The physical states are influenced by temperature and pressure. It take more temperature to boil water (the transition point from liquid to gas) when the water is under pressure such as a tight pot lid.

The pressure on the inner core is such that even though it is very hot the metal cannot transition from solid to liquid.
