What prevents you from asking someone out?

Question

If you see someone you are attracted to, strike up a decent conversation with them, what prevents you from asking them out?

(besides the obvious, are they g*y or not)

Hello,

Well fear of rejection can be one factor but I notice that most girls in all my years have been very nice and tactful when they mention my boyfriend, fiance or husband sometime during the basic conversation and that gives me a pretty good indication not to ask them out.

Well that kinda only applies to guys.

But either way, girls or boys, I don't ask because I'm just nervous. I guess rejection. I don't take it easily. I guess I'm just insecure. =/

A lot plays into it. Not sure if I'd be able to give then certain things that they may want or need, because of how I am. I don't know if it's because I've never explored that area of me or if one day it will just pass, but...for now, I'm just unsure.

I'm really shy and I honestly don't take rejection well so I just wait and see if they'll say something to me.

Insecurity with oneself: lack of confidence and self-esteem.  Not uncommon, but will do wonders when you get some.

rejection is the first thing that comes to mind, but also i fear that i will come off as desperate or dorky and i will say the wrong thing and sound stupid and burn all my work

One reason is the fear of being rejected. Rejection is the worst feeling any human can feel because we live in a society where we have to fit in and it's much worse if it is by someone you like.

I used to like someone, but he told me he likes someone else when I asked him if he liked me.  But I am still a good friend of his.  Now I like Joe Jonas, but I have only had 1 chance to do that, but I opened my mouth, and I was so happy about meeting him, that no words came out.
