  1. space and time, depth perception life of materials  and what human factors want building and design,

  2. Do you mean this the other way around?

Granted that an owner or partner of an architecture firm may be a businessman or engineer and not an architect, but most often Architects own their firms as the Principal Architect.

If you want to know how to work your way up in a company to eventually become a Principal, the sad answer, all over the world, is that that comes the money. If you reliably prove you are able to bring into the office clients, who's projects are financially benefitial to the company, then you will likely become a principal.

Some architects make principal through being able to effectively run a company. I have heard of partners who are good at outsourcing work and saving the company significant money while making outsourcing work. I have also heard of architects who know how to manage people and projects so effectively that this results in cost savings and therefore they were made partners.

I have never heard of someone who became a partner by just doing their job well and being talented and competant, unless you start your own firm and then you have to do all of the above things anyway.
