What prisons do criminals in the District of Columbia get sent to?

Question

Assuming of course that they do not break a Federal law, do they go to state prison in VA or MD? Do they stay in DC city jail? I have always wondered this.

They get sent to federal prison.  

The entire criminal justice system in DC is federally run.  There is a separate DC superior court, but no prosecutor.  The DC federal prosecutor prosecutes local crimes.

They use to send them to Lorton, VA. Now if it is a federa crime they ship them out of the city. It could be almost any where in the country.
