What problems are utility companies having to face today in providing energy for more people?

It could be any kind of problems.

And are there alternative energy sources that companies can use?

  1. My gut sense is that utility companies just don't get it, refuse to look at the big environmental picture. They avoid making necessary changes, do not invest money and time to improve the quality of their product, or in making their product environmentally sound and efficient.

I am aware that this answer is general and it is a complex subject; but I believe the reasons stated above are the essence of their probelms-simple. No, not easy,  but they need to get their act moving, agree?

  2. longer extension cords

  3. The problem actually isn't generation of energy.   We have plenty of that now.   It's getting energy from one place to another; the power lines we now have just cannot handle the load of more electricity going through them.   Look at some large power lines now, and again in the middle of a heat wave.   You will see that they sag much further during the heat wave because they are getting so hot from all the electrons moving through them they expand and stretch.   Until companies start building more lines or someone invents a high temperature super conductor we will have power problems.

  4. Nothing.  I'd say they're doing a very good job.  The only technical challenge I've read is how solar and wind powerplants don't adjust to the power load the way other powerplants do.

  5. The first and foremost problem is the red tape put in place to making it near impossible to get any thing done. Then when you get the paper work out of the way, then all the well meaning greenies protest it and halt any progress. Then when some hot shot gets out there and say this is the way to go, people jump on the band wagon with out the slightest knowledge if this source of energy is even plausible or cost effective.

To answer your last question there are good alt. sources but they will not be used due to trumped-up environmental regulations.

  6. The main problems come from environmental kooks who try to stop them from providing energy to the people who want it.  It makes everything more expensive, especially for the poor.

There are many types of energy sources: coal, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro-electric, oil, to name a few.
