What problems arose with Princess Diana when she started helping AIDS victims?

She became a kind of stupid looking blond character who rode in the back of limos . . . And then later was involved in a auto-crash that was related to poor driving skills by the chauffeur.

I just think it gave the Royal family the willies that she would "stoop to touch those loathsome people."  At least that's the idea I got about the whole thing.  AIDS at that time was not a--I don't know what word I'm looking for--high class disease, and so the uppity-ups didn't want to associate with people who had AIDS.  Diana kind of put a more compassionate face on the victims, but I think the Royals were still turned off by her involvement.
