  1. Main problem is sourcing the quality of coal that is needed to produce power economically and safely.

The coal that used to be available in the UK is now exhausted. This coal was relatively free of pollutants.  Coal now has to be imported and transported.  This increases costs and does no good to the industry's carbon footprint.

The imported coal is often soft and 'brown' this gives off a lot of sulphur and other acid rain type precursers.

Fear not! the technology is available and in place to cope with these pollutants. There is a problem though. If we complain about coal fired stations we throw ourselves into the arms of the nuclear industry. 2. they produce a lot of CO2, even more than gas or fuel power  stations. and coal contains more contaminants that requires filtering.

  3. Coal is filthy. Co2 no big deal but the filth that goes into the sky from coal is off the chart. This URL is from a guy who does not believe in global warming.
