What problems will arise if we rapidly accelerate the phase-out of CFCs?

i know that cfcs (chlorofluorocarbons) are detrimental because they break up our ozone layer and allow excess UV rays in, leading to cancer, cataracts etc.

but if cfcs are so bad, why aren't we completely banning them? i know we're slowly phasing them out but why not just ban them right away??

  1. If we stop the use of it altogether, the rate of global warming will slow down and our ozone layer will come back to "health" so to speak.  If we increase the use of CFCs then it is only a matter of time until we completely diminish the ozone layer.  Just one molecule of CFC can diminish 100,000 ozone molecules.  I cannot remember what site I read this on but I found that very sobering.

I completely agree with you with banning CFCs.  Unfortunately a lot of the products we use have have CFC contents in it.  Many companies would be in jeopardy of going under if they had to discontinue their products.  That could hurt our economy even more than it already is.  Most businesses are finding alternatives more and more.  A good example would be the automotive and appliances.  They are using a different coolant and antifreeze that is more environment safe.  Refrigerators and air-conditioners are using a different type of collant that is more environment friendly and also a lot more energy efficient.

The site I read this on was scientific and reputable.  I would not use it if it were off a blog of some sort.
