I am trying to figure out if it is possible to pull scenes from movies into a digital file for photoshop like a jpeg or tiff or something. If it is indeed possible what programs do I need to do it.

Thanks

  1. You cannot take 'screen shots' of videos by using the Print Scrn key. It will just turn out black. You will need to use third-party software.

VLC can easily take screen shots from videos. It can also play anything and it's completely free. VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

    To take screen shots:

    1) One method is to use the hot key for taking screenshots. The default keys are alt+ctrl+s (you can change this of course in Settings->Preferences->Hotkeys Settings)

    2) The second is just right click on the screen while the movie is playing and select snapshot.

    3) The third and final one is Video->Snapshot. It will take one that will appear in the upper left corner briefly.

NOTE: Make sure the output directory for your screens is selected as well. By default its in the vlc folder in "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC".

  2. Google Media Player Classic.  It lets you take frame by frame snapshots.
