Question:

What program I should learn if I want to become a Video Game Artist?

I'm into the modeling of the characters and scenery, so I'd want to start off by learning a program like 3D Studio Max or Maya. I don't know much about 3D Studio Max OR Maya, so I want to buy a book that would help teach me one of the programs. Here's the problem though, I don't know if I should learn how to use Maya, or how to use 3D Studio Max. Does anyone have any input on this situation?

  1. Well, To Give you a start, you can use FPS Creator, which is a really basic game maker. you can make your own games and stuff just like counter strike. you can buy the tutorials or learn them in You tube.com.

    Making 3d stuff in Maya and stuff are advanced stuff, and it can give you a start for designing. Video Game Artists don't just design characters, they write codes and stuff, so IF you want a start, just do use FPS CREATOR for now


  2. Well, I'm in the industry and the only thing I can truly say is...

    You have to learn both at some stage. But don't worry, they cross over a lot, and the skills you get from one can be applied to the other. 3D max will be the easier to learn because you can watch their entire video training series on Youtube. In 12 hours, you'll know everything, but will need much more experience. Then, if you're ambitious, you can learn Maya (a bit more difficult). Not sure about training vids for that...

    If you're thinking of being an artist for 3d models, don't neglect to learn how to make good textures. There are so many tools out there, but you'd want to begin with the basics Photoshop or Paintshop Pro (oldies, but they cover the basics). but then again... I assume you've already got those under your belt.
