I just got a handyman DCR-SR62 video camera. It works great but my video editer (microsoft movie maker) wont import the files for editing. Is there another software that will work? They are mpeg's so i don't see the issue... Is there a free way to edit them any where?

  1. I haven't found a free editor that works with MPEG-2.  I'd second the vote for Sony Vegas, but start with Vegas Movie Studio - the Pro version is a lot more than you need to get started.  If you get bitten by the editing bug the Pro version can read your VMS project files, and the upgrade cost is just the difference between the two versions.

  2. Adobe Premiere

But the best i'd say apple final cut.

  3. so, we stick to 'free for life' editor, i.e., wmmaker

mpeg format is not supported by XPwmm2 but by Vista wmm6.

You will have to convert mpeg file to .avi or .wmv

download 'free' converter (Prism or Super or Windows media encoder - just google)

others offer free short period trials and finally you come back to same constraint:

  4. if you had a mac you could use it straight out of the box for video editing. it comes built in with software standard.

on a pc it is much more complicated.

  5. Microsoft movie maker is probably the worst choice to use as anything built into windows for multimedia basically sucks, that's why 3rd party companies make software that's so much better.

Personally, I like Sony Vegas for editing,  They have a basic version for under $100 and Pro for over $500.  Looks like they have a special right now too for 25% off all their software.  You can also download the free trial.
