  1. Linux programs are compatible with Linux.

You cannot install a Windows or MAC program on Linux, but there will be some Linux versions of Windows programs and alternatives if there is no Linux version of that program..

  2. i got mandriva linux dual booted at home, comes with open office so all word programs are taken care of also comes with firefox. Its taken a bit of getting use too but i like it so far everything seems to work well got my video drivers finally installed for my 9800GTX but haven't tried a game on it yet. You can check out www.icewalkers.com its a linux site with tons of programs and distributions of linux

  3. Linux is an operating system and can completely replace your existing OS. If your current OS is a version of Microsoft Windows then your programs that are designed to run on windows will not run on your Linux unless you use emulating software like wine for example. Many programs  that exist for windows also exist for Linux just like many also exist for the Mac. For example you can download Firefox for Linux for web browsing, OpenOffice for an alternative to MS Office, popular media players etc. Basically you can find an alternative for pretty much everything. The bonus is that most of them are free and often better in my opinion. If you really must put your Windows applications on your Linux then use wine.

  4. linux can do pretty much anyhting windows windows can

most software has linux versions. if not, there are replacements that do the same thing, if not...you can prolly use WINE to run most windows programs. you wont be missing out an anyhting, except maybee windows live messenger, and itunes.

  5. I use ubuntu. To run windows apps, I use "wine" which will run a majority of windows software.

  6. If you are knew to Linux i suggest you try Ubuntu. It is very user-friendly and there are many applications available including a office package (open office).
