I have some liquor and it says 52% alcohol by volume but it doesn't label the proof rating.

  1. 52% would be 104 proof,  proof is just double the percentage  so  200 proof is 100% alcohol by volume.

Whiskey like jack daniels is usually 80 proof  so its 40% alchohol

  2. 104

You double the percentage and that's your proof

  3. In America, it means it's 104pf.

In the UK, it used to mean that it's 91pf, owing to different standards of calculating alcoholic proof in the USA and the UK.  Since 1980, however, spirits sold in the UK have had to be labeled in terms of percentage alcohol by volume instead.

Other Commonwealth countries (Canada, Australia, etc) formerly used the UK measurements, but since the UK has stopped using them, the American definition of 'proof' has become more common (they are all still labeled with percent alcohol by volume, as well).

ABV is usually a better measuring stick, since it's easier to convert to quantities of pure alcohol for a given volume (e.g. 50mL of 40pct [80pf] whisky is .4*50mL=20mL of pure alcohol).  It's also only proper to speak of 'proof' in reference to distilled spirits, like whisky, rum, and brandy, whereas *all* alcoholic drinks, including beer and wine, are labeled with abv.
