Question:

What propeller should I use for this motor? EVINRUDE 48 SPL?

The prop is loose on the shaft of my 1995 48 hp SPL Evinrude. I was told by the previous owner that there was a washer missing, but after taking it off, it seems that the washer is there and intact. By looking at a replacement kit, it seems as if all the necessary hardware is there.

I'm not sure if the prop that came with the motor is too big, or something, or what would cause the prop to be loose. It moves forward and back, (as if a washer WAS missing), but not side to side. What do you think this is from? What could cause it to be so loose?

How can I tell what size prop I need just by the size of the shaft? I know the splines have something to do with it (mine has 13...), but is there any other criteria for determining if this prop is right for this motor?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

THANKS!!!!!

  1. I don't think your prop is shot.

    Something must be missing.

There is a special splined washer that goes on the back of the prop.

Check to see if it is there.

If you aren't sure take it in to the dealer and they should sell you the parts you need.

  2. it sounds like your thrust washer, make sure it is installed correct. if it is turned around it will allow a little play in the prop. made that  mistake before.

  3. Sounds like the previous owner was talking about the thrust washer being the missing part. check google images for a pic of one n see if you have it or not. As for the right size prop. go here  http://www.turningpointpropellers.com/hu...                                        and use their prop wizard at the bottom of the page.

  4. The prop fitting the shaft is one thing, but it is difficult to say what size you need for your boat/engine combo. Basically what you need will allow your engine to run at it's recommended top RPM which is probably about 5500 RPM.
