  1. Hi there,

I would be inclined to wait until you get there, and see which of the library books is best suited to you and the course material before buying any books. Your tutors will be more pleased with your work if you use journals as your main resource though, as they are more specific and up to date than any text book - you might be best off not getting any books at all!

I bought loads of books for my psych and I wish I hadn't - i would have saved a LOT of money...

  2. The University should give you guidance on which text books are relevant. There are thousands in the book shops including a lot from the USA.

Did you not get any idea from the Uni's prospectus?

  3. The ones that are requirements for your courses. And the latest editions. If you haven't received any info on your required textbooks yet, I'd call admissions and find out. Or call the bookstore and tell them the courses you're enrolled in and ask them what the textbooks are that you need to purchase.

  4. Well... of course you have to get the ones you need for your classes, which the teacher usually picks.  I don't know what level of school you are at, but if you are an undergraduate, I think it would be wise for you to learn about theories and practice so you can learn about what you like and don't like.  All theories and practices don't work with everyone.  For instance, Carl Rogers's Humanistic views are good in theory, but the techniques do not work for me where I'm working at, so I don't read up on Humanism like I do read about CBT or something.  Get it?

  5. Usually when you get your course syllabus for a class, it will tell you which books you should buy.  Usually the university gets the list ahead of time so they can order enough of the right books.  So if I were you, I would ask the university book store what the books for your courses are.  Find out how much the book store charges for them.  Then see if cheaper copies are available on Amazon.com or eBay or something.
