What public records do I search to find if there is a notice of default on a property?

Is this just what's on the deed or is there an actual place where I will find this specific information?

  1. Contact a title company.  They can run a search for you.  Unfortunately it will cost you but it is the only way to be sure.  If your are buying a property the title company will do this (and insure against mistakes) .

  2. The other poster is correct that a title company is the sure way to do it.  But, if you really want to do it yourself it is the County Recorder (in most areas) that should have the records you want.  In many larger population counties these records are being put online and in some counties they are free to access.  You will NOT find what you are looking for on the deed.
