  1. Objects in the universe don't have to have a "purpose" - that is a human concept that is not necessarily a fundamental property of the universe as a whole.

There are 12 known magnetars at this time, the closest to Earth is 4U 0142+61, at a distance of 2.5 kiloparsecs (about 8,500 light years).

  2. They are high magnetic collapsed stars.

"A magnetar is a neutron star with an extremely powerful magnetic field, the decay of which powers the emission of copious amounts of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, particularly X-rays and gamma-rays.[1] "

"1E 1048.1-5937, located 9,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. The original star, from which the magnetar formed, had a mass 30 to 40 times that of the Sun. "

Purpose? Creation. It is an act of creation. They give off high immense radiations for a short period of time. That energy goes somewhere in the universe, to stimulate life or to add energy to a system. All things in the universe are about creation.

  3. The same purpose as everything else in the universe - none whatsoever. Things just are what they are.

  4. "Purpose" is a human concept and attribution.  Nature simply is.  Magnetars (a vile name) are a consequence of the collapse of certain types of stars into a dwarf state, pulsars, but with a very high magnetic field.

  5. Well, since you're asin', a Magnetar is a neutron star with a huge amount of electromagnification.  They exist, and then they don't, cause they blow up and "become" something else.  They don't have to, nor do they need to "serve a purpose", they just are!  There aren't any that are "close" to the Earth, unless you consider being in the same galaxy "close", which if you do, then it is thought there's approximately 30 million in this galaxy , the Milky Way.
