What purpose does the ego serve?

Isn't it the cause of many problems in the world? What good is the ego to a human? What's it's purpose?

I guess it's to give us the confidence to accomplish our dreams, and follow our desires....without the ego what would be our driving force?

I agree though, that it has caused many problems in the world, but i guess it served it's purpose there too, because it separates good people from bad people...and allows other's to learn from those bad people's mistakes.

Its a buffer a foil helps to hide our insecurities
