What qualifications do I need to become a dance teacher?

I am talking mainly about ballet though I can do quite alot of ballroom. Im grade 5/6 ballet at the moment. I'm on pointe and I help with the little ones. What university/ a levels do I need to be a dance teacher???

  1. Are you in the UK? If so...

    If you want to teach dance in a school (or at least a state school) you will need a degree and QTS (qualified teacher status). Your degree might not be primarily in dance but you would have to have a very good grouding in it.

    If you want to teach private lessons then you would have to have a teaching qualification from the board of whichever style of dance you wish to teach.

  2. It would help if you got a certficate in teaching.

    BA in theatre performance, performing arts, or something like that.

    I don't know where you live, but for schools:

    University of Georgia has a great one, and Georgia is one of the best states to start your own business.

    Also: http://www.ny.com/dance/type.html As you know, NY is one of the best places. (Native NYer) That will show you some GREAT schools.

    I'd reccomend: Ailvin Ailey, Martha Gramham, and Paul Taylor.
