I don't live in the USA but I hope to one day, I dont have enough qualifications to train to become a kindergarten teacher or above but but I do have enough to train to become an early years/pre kindergarten teacher I currently live in the uk but I really want to move to the states. I know each state is different but what is the basic quaifications. Would an honors degree in early years be enough? Also what is the pay like in pre kindergarten is bad/good?

  1. well you have to take all all the ece units. ece stands for early childhood education. you can make up to $15.00 per hour depending how good you are.

Like you mentioned, it depends on which State you are in.  Qualifications for preschool teachers are finally becoming stiffer but not as stiff as it should be considering the importance of early childhood.  I'm not sure what an honors degree is...you'll have to do a little research on degree comparisons.  :-)  In a private daycare/preschool...a lead teacher must have a minimum of a CDA-Child Development Associate's or equivalent credit hours and experience...with so many hours in early childhood.  So you may have what you need.  However, if you would like to work in a state or federally funded program...most of the lead teachers are required to have bacherlor's degrees with an early childhood endorsement.  The CDA can be done in about 2 years.  If you have the correct courses and experience you may be able to just fill out the paperwork and get the observation done...which was an option for me.

As sad as it is...the pay is not good...no way around that.  If you are single...you may be able to get buy but if you're married...your income could not be the primary income.  It varies from area to area.  We live in a rural area and one of the state funded programs teachers...remember has a bacherlor's degree and an early childhood endorsement and she made $10/hr.  In the city you may make more.  Those of us who've been in this field for years understand that we aren't in it for the money...that's for sure.

    Good luck!
