  1. You *may* be able to find a job after receiving a BS in chemistry, biochemistry, or some similar undergraduate degree. But this would be contingent on the level of experience that you garner in the workplace after you graduate.

Most people interested in drug design, however, complete graduate work (PhD program) in medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, or pharmacology. Other disciplines might work as well: physiology, biochemistry, informatics, etc. Once you receive your doctorate, you may pursue post-doctoral experiences in academia or industry.

You're looking at a minimum of 4 years for undergrad, 6-7 years as a doctoral student, and perhaps 2-3 years post-doctoral work. It really depends on the company and the need.

  2. The three major degrees which come to mind which would lead to that field would be Pharmacy, pharmacology and chemistry(especially with more synthetic drugs coming out).

Specifically pharmacy is all about researching and designing drugs and dosage forms, so that might be for you.

Basically chemistry, biology and maths are required knowlege for drug research and developing.
