  1. In UK?  NVQ or City & Guilds qualifications.  NVQ is work based so you really need to be in a big enough workshop to have an on site assessor or have access to a local assessor. For City & Guilds, which is more formal you will need to attend college either full time or on day release.

Talk to your job centre as the best bet for you is to get a job with a garage where you will work there 4 days a week and go to college one day a week.  You will learn more, and more quickly, this way than doing a full time course.

Be warned, your wages the first couple of years will be total c**p and even when fully qualified it is not a very well paid trade.  Too many young lads like you wanting to work with cars so there are usually more people wanting to do it than there are jobs available.

  2. As long as you dont mind getting smelly, dirty, oil hands , mucky finger nails, and  can perform under pressure and can meet deadlines and  sevice times  ( when qualified and up to speed )

I think you only need an interest to learn and be a petrol head and love cars  or   whatever

I started as a  car mechanic,  didnt like it, too fiddly and  STUPID dealer service repair times

Went on to  HGV... fitter   and  was happy  but  money is rubbish for what you do

went to  Plant fitting,   and  bigger lumps   bigger  pay

now  fix  HUGE Generators     Fitter/  Electrician     ££££££  !!  Happy

Start small,   if your not happy,   change your mind and move on

    That what I did

Still wish I had joined the army from school,  and learnt properly  than a YTS scheme

  3. Personnally, you should be mechanically inclined, have alot of patience, and willing to learn. In some high school they offer courses in auto mechanics, you can have a good start from there before you go to college.

  4. Look at a college course in mechanics - ask at your local college of further education, or mention it to your school careers adviser.

  5. you need to spend 12 months in a zoo before you can become a grease monkey

  6. take nvq level 2 in perforing engineering operations, then do an apprenticeship for nvq level 3.

but if you go with bmw..they will train u up good. formula 1 is fierce, you should get a foundation degree at university if you want to be part of motorsport

  7. Anyone can do it if you work privately for yourself, but autoengineering courses are available, variable and there is even an industry to be in.

Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI)

You are likely to be recognised more with this.

  8. none but if you know some manchancs would be a help good luck

  9. hi chris ok here is what you need to do be prepared to to work for good mechanic who has time to teach you and learn from expierience  dont bother with college cause the ones who try to teach you havent worked on cars for years trust me ive been s mechanic for over 30 years and i still learn something new eveyday you need to get a job in a garage and watch and learn and listen then when you have some knowlege go to a mechanics course for a few days and get a certificate

  10. academically...you don't need qualifications....try to get in as an apprentice at a garage & you will learn on the job - plus you might get day release for college....& of course, there are evening classes.

one day...you could start up your own business...think of how many cars there are on the road -you never see a poor mechanic!!  you will always be in work if you are a car mechanic....so honey - go for it!!

  11. Visit a largish main dealer and ask if there are vacancies for apprentices. A good firm will send you on City and Guilds courses at a nearby F.E. college, and send you to training courses for the make of cars they sell. A small outfit won't have the resources and you will not get good tuition.
