Question:

What qualifies as proof of U.S. citizenship?

I'm planning on taking a trip to Canada, and the travel.gov article states:

"U.S. citizens traveling to Canada are required to show U.S. Government-issued photo ID and proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate."

Would my old, expired passport qualify as proof of U.S. citizenship? I know it works for tax forms when I get jobs, but I'm not sure if it'll work here.

Photo I.D. I'm guessing would obviously count as, say, a driver's license.

  1. My guess is that an expired passport WOULD work; it is certainly proof of citizenship, which is all they ask for.

  2. Driver's License, and a Birth Certificate.

I do not think an expired passport will work.

  3. If  you were born in the US - then you have mentioned the only 2 acceptable forms of proof of citizenship.  1) a valid passport or 2) a birth certificate.  So you better start working on getting one or the other.

There are a couple of others but they are more rare or different circumstances.  Such as a green card, certificate of citizenship (so people who wouldn't have a US birth certificate) or a certificate of Indian Status,  maybe military card.

  4. You cannot use an expired passport.  The WHTI specificaly states it must be  a valid passport...or birth certificate.  See site below and read under,"

U.S. Passports and WHTI  Compliant Documents:"

  5. birth certificate

    US military ID

    drivers license

    ID card

passport (U.S. Passport must be valid 3 months beyond intended stay)
