My bf is spending a week in jail because of some traffic violations. His bail is $2,212. I can come up with about 650 of it, however, we may need assistance for the rest. He has a car, however his car is probably worth less than $1,000. Im not sure if its worth signing over the title. We dont have any valuable jewelry and we dont own a house. What are the normal qualifactions to recieved assistance from a bond agency?

  1. What traffic violations?

Let him sit in jail.  I did the bond thing all of ONE time for a boyfriend, and trust me, it's not worth it.

Edit: Is this really the type of guy you'd want your daughter with?  This might be a good time to rethink some choices here.

  2. Hello Kim. To answer your specific question, the bondsman would want tangible assets such as real estate ( you own your home and put it up for collateral). This would be used simply as a guarantee. In either case, the bondsman still wants his 10% paid in full since this is his profit for fronting the bond money to bail the B/F out of jail for the week. Try to remember that a bondsman is a businessman. He is not a government entity which helps people. He is there to make a profit from each transaction.

I fully understand that this is an emotional issue here. You dont want him to sit in jail for a week, but to look at your situation realistically,  you are telling me that you would need an additional $1300 to get him out. Unless he has one REALLY great job, financially, you are better off losing the week's pay that he would get if at home and letting him stay.

By all means, do what you feel is best in your circumstance, but paying out over $2,000 for one week is a very steep figure that cant be earned back from working a job.

Best of luck and I hope this helps
