Communication can be written, verbal, and/or nonverbal. When writing, do not use "u" when you mean "you". Effective oral communication requires thinking, timing, making word choices appropriate to the level of understanding of the listeners. Verbosity is frowned upon. Appropriateness of the content is essential. Nonverbal communication includes, among others, distance from listener (proximity) gestures, posture, and eye contact.

Oh, and critical listening is a huge part of communication.

At the very top of the list: trustworthiness.  All important relationships are based on this quality... family relationships as well as friend relationships.  It's an unspoken truth in marriage... without the trust, you really don't have anything meaningful.
