Please tell me you are kidding, it would be so much easier to ask for a quality that makes him not mans best friend.  Be rich or poor, your dog will stay with you, kick him and he will l**k your hand, he will feel and lay with you in your time of sorrow, and rejoice in your time of success.  He will wait endlessly for you to return, and greet you with kisses and joy whether you are gone for a moment or a month. Should you leave this earth before him, if allowed he will lay on your grave to wait your return. He will lay down his own life to protect you and yours.

Plus he is happy to eat the scraps.

As I sit watching the beagle from h**l nudge the trash can lid, I have to say that I've often wondered that myself.  The old cat Yoshi is sitting on the back of an arm chair purring and watching the pup with disdain.  

I do know that when I sit down, that pup will be right in my lap either wanting to play or wanting to be rubbed and will eventually fall asleep on my lap.  If I stand up, she'll either follow me or sit there patiently and wait for me to come back,  The cat, on the other hand, will wander by and swat me a few times during the evening and might jump in my lap if he feels the need for body heat.  If I shift my body in the slightest, the cat will be off in a huff and won't return until it suits him.

I also know that the dog needs me more, and that makes me feel good because I like being needed.  She can't stay alone for 24 hours and not even notice my absence like the cat can.

Dogs are wonderful creatures, we have two and love them dearly. We have to keep them outside, we live in the country with a pond and a creek. These dogs love to play in both! They come up to the house muddy and wet every day. I would have to bathe them every day before they could come in, no thank you. They have a nice large dog house under the carport. When we are going away for the week-end we close them in their fence in the back yard so they won't get in trouble.   Poppy

Unconditional love. Always runs to the door to see you when you come home. Always want hugs and gives you hugs, by sitting at your feet.

Waits patiently to be fed. Does not argue back or judge you. Would give their life to save you from harm. Dogs have a sixth sense and know when you are not feeling well or are sad. If you have a boo-boo or scratch a dog will l**k it and something in their saliva makes it heal.

my little boy knows when i get home from work and is waiting at the door for me.   then after a little bit of tummy rubs and rough housing, we go outside where he tells me everything that has happened today.  when it is bed time, after a small amount of peruasion, he sometimes will let me have some blankets but never the center of the bed.  i would have to say unconditional love on both our parts

Unconditional love and their keen sense - they know when you're feeling blue and they come up to you and push their cute little cold, wet noses close to you and tell you with those big beautiful puppy eyes that they love you and your heart just melts.   How many humans in your life had that kind of magic?
